I had just bought this house. Fixed it up. I earned and saved enough as a single mom and first generation immigrant for part of the down payment. Family support covered the rest. My mom stands in the window, helping with childcare. I planted the garden in the fall, and then what feels like the biggest snowstorm Portland has ever seen came down hard, heavy enough to drain the vitality from some of my most precious plants. I am standing in the yard looking at the damage, already knowing a few will not survive. I will replant.
