At the start of a new year, many of us want a fresh beginning, so we set new goals, want to bring in new energy, and rely on new intentions. But often we are trying to build the new while still hanging on to the old, so it is no surprise that by February we can find ourselves feeling weighed down. If this sounds familiar, take a look at the tasks, habits, expectations, and commitments that once made sense but may have outlived their usefulness in your life.
If so, intentionally step back and notice where your time, energy, and attention are being drained. This is conscious subtraction, and it is a powerful act of (self) leadership.
When you let go of what is outdated, space naturally opens for fresh clarity, focus, and positive growth.
Here is a simple clearing practice inspired by Gretchen Rubin’s decluttering principles:
- Set aside one focused hour. Decide not to multitask.
- Choose one area to look at closely. Your calendar, inbox, or physical space.
- Touch what is in front of you. Even digitally. Click, open, hold, review.
- Ask yourself. Would I rather have this item, or the space it takes up?
