(A 3-Minute Nervous System Reset)
Water offers a useful reminder for our nervous system. It adjusts to obstacles and never wastes energy fighting the shape of the riverbed. We benefit from remembering this wisdom because often, especially when life presents challenges, we dig in. Our shoulders tighten, breath shortens, jaw clenches. The instinct is to prepare, endure, and push through. This can be useful at times, but when it becomes chronic, the cost adds up. We live in tension, and our body pays the price.
So for the next few minutes, borrow water’s approach and do this short reset:
1. Set Up
- Start with a sip of water. Hydration helps the nervous system settle. Take a few slow sips and give yourself a moment to pause.
- Lengthen your exhale. Breathe in through your nose and let the exhale last slightly longer than the inhale. (This signals to the body to shift out of stress.)
- Release the grip points from head to toe. Unclench the jaw, drop the shoulders, soften the hands, press your feet gently into the ground.
2. Let Go
- Now picture the current. Imagine yourself sitting beside this steady flowing stream. Notice the water moving around rocks and continuing on its way.
Watch our super short river video to spark your imagination. - Choose one emotionally, mentally heavy thing that you have been carrying in your mind, heart and body : a worry, a frustration, a concern.
- Place it in the current. Maybe you set it on a leaf or small branch. Or imagine writing it on a piece of paper, tossing it into the water.
- Release it. The method does not matter. Watch it drift away. Let the water take it downstream and out of sight. This can happen slow or fast.
3. Close With Flow
- Notice what has shifted, even slightly. Not everything that arrives into your nervous system needs to be carried forward.
- Trust the simplicity and repeat as needed. Short resets retrain your whole system to respond to pressure with flexibility.
Notice the ease in your body when the internal gripping stops.
