Created by Monika Herceg, Narrative Strategist at Courageous Being, this practice is perfect for those moments when, as we like to say, you are ready to "intentionally rest to be at your best" and could use a little structure to help you begin.

1. Choose a letter.

Pick one letter of the alphabet. Using that letter, write up to fifteen words that make you think of anything having to do with the idea of REST. Your words can be nouns, verbs, adjectives, emotions, places, memories, people, or unexpected associations.

2. Change the rules as needed.

Switch letters. Write fewer than fifteen words. Include a word that does not fit the pattern. The structure is only there to help you begin.

If you are practicing with others, share a few words with the group.

3. Write your poem.

Using some of your words, write a poem titled:

Today I Will Not...

Consider:

When are you kind to yourself?
When are you not?
What do you deny yourself?
What expectations do you place on yourself?
What would you like to let go of today?

4. Write without editing.

Do not worry about rhyme, grammar, or poetic form. Write freely and honestly. Let the poem be unfinished, surprising, ordinary, or strange.

5. Read it aloud, if you wish.

Read the poem quietly to yourself, or share it with others. Listening is also a complete form of participation.

Why this practice matters

"Today I will not..." can help you name a pressure, expectation, responsibility, or habit you are ready to loosen. Sometimes naming it creates just enough breathing room for rest, kindness, and a different choice.
