Did you know that individuals exposed to natural light in their workplaces report higher levels of job satisfaction, productivity and overall well-being compared to those in artificially lit spaces?

A pre-pandemic survey of 1,600 office workers in North America revealed that:

  • Access to natural light and views significantly enhances the employee experience. It improves overall happiness, work satisfaction, work performance, and organizational commitment.
  • Conversely, the absence of natural light and views detrimentally impacts the employee experience, leading to eyestrain, fatigue and a sense of gloominess.
  • Prolonged technology use exacerbates this desire for natural light and views, with 73% of employees agreeing that “the longer they use their technology devices, the more they desire a visual break such as taking a walk or glancing at the view outside.”

Post-pandemic, access to natural light and the outdoors while working remotely seems to play a role in the return-to-office debate. Consider this article from UCLA Health, which answers the following question:

“My company called the employees back to the office, and I’m dreading it. There aren’t many windows, and it’s all fluorescent lights. Being able to be outdoors while working from home has been great. I know I’m less depressed when I get to be in daylight. Is there any science behind that?”
